Apple Confirms Surprise New iPhone 12 Release

Almost everything is known about Apple's new iPhone 12 range: both good and, more recently, bad.  And now Apple has also confirmed their release.

Speaking on an earnings call following the publication of Apple's (stratospheric) third-quarter earnings, company CFO Luca Mesri revealed that the iPhone 12 line-up would be delayed.

Acclaimed Apple insider John Prosser has added more references to Apple's iPhone 12 release news.  He tells me that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models are "staggered, so they want to try to make them the best one to announce."  This suggests that we may see different levels of stock for entry-level and pro versions at launch and availability is likely to change greatly, depending on which model you purchase, if Apple  Can't balance it ahead of its newly launched timeframe.  Apple has already done wonders to get these new iPhones to market closer to their normal timeframe, but it seems likely that this will result in some bumpy edges for their release.

John Prosser gave me further information on the iPhone 12 line-up saying that "the small rung is mostly confirmed".  There has been much speculation about whether Apple will reduce the size of the Notch on its new range, Prosser has been an early advocate of this.

In recent weeks, however, the suspicion has run out, with many leaks saying that a notch introduced with the iPhone X in 2017 will make the notch unchanged.  What remains in the air, however, is how small it is and whether it will shrink enough to improve the look of the iPhone range, which began to look dated compared to the hole punch designs widely adopted by rivals  is.  That said, none of those rivals are trying to fit into Face ID.

It is a surprise that a) the iPhone 12 launch event is understood to be the earliest in years, and b) the retail stock was initially expected to be in short supply rather than particularly delayed.  Said that, Maesrti said that the good news is that the supply "will be available a few weeks later [than usual]."

For reference, Apple launched the iPhone 11 range on 20 September.  By this measure, and Apple is a big fan of Friday's retail dates, which will implement the release of the iPhone 12 line-up on October 2 or October 9.  Under the promising and over deliveries, October 2 Love will be my bet.

But perhaps the biggest question is, are the iPhone 12 models worth the wait?  Sure, they get a lot of big details right, but Apple appears controversially to increase prices while reducing its battery capabilities and also scraping popular catch-up screen techs.

This is a gamble.  But at least now you have an extra "few weeks" to make up your mind.
